About

The term "hallowed ground" encompasses many interpretations, reflecting the diverse human experiences associated with significant places. These places are sacred or revered and often related to religious or historical significance.

Churches within the Black community are considered hallowed grounds because of their importance as places of worship and community and their historical significance in the struggle for civil rights and social justice. Churches have historically been a place for refuge, strength, and solidarity.

Cemeteries are also considered hallowed grounds because they are places where the deceased are laid to rest and where their memories are honored and preserved. Continuing to protect these cemeteries confronts the horrors of discrimination and violence and restores humanity and justice to those who are both named and unnamed.
