Description
In February 2018, researcher and legal scholar Lisa Henderson presented her findings about the free people of color in Wayne County. Lisa grew up in Wilson but is a descendant of free people that lived in the communities of Dudley and Eureka. According to the US Census in 1860, over 700 free people of color lived in Wayne County, many owning land and businesses.

After graduating from Harvard Law School, Lisa earned a masters degree from the Department of History at Columbia University. In 1990 Lisa finished her thesis "Involuntary Apprenticeship of Free Children of Color in Wayne County, North Carolina: 1830-1860. A bound copy is available in the local history room at the Wayne County Public Library in Goldsboro, NC.
