Fort Granville Gabion Remains
-
Description
-
During the French and Indian War, the North Carolina General Assembly authorized the building of a fort, Fort Granville, on the northern end of the island facing Ocracoke Inlet. This was to replace the old wooden lighthouse that burned on Shell Castle. Gabions, large barrels filled with sand, were placed in front of artillery for protection from enemy fire. Today, the remains of some of these gabions can still be seen when the tide is low and the wind is blowing out of the south, away from the island. There are approximately 10 left (as of 2021) in the water, just a few feet off the island.
