- Between 1968 and 1969, students from East Mecklenburg High School turned a backyard shed into the headquarters of "Inquisition", an underground magazine that challenged Charlotte's political and cultural boundaries. The liberal content drew the attention of city leaders and became the focus of a landmark case- "Inquisition v. City of Charlotte". The case was the first in the nation where city zoning laws challenged the free press and the First Amendment.
