Imitation Artwork Challenge

Hi my name is Jasmine my major is nursing and I want to specialize in pediatric nursing.
My interests are sports, mostly basketball, volleyball, and shot put and discus, and
during my free time I like to sit outside new to the bonfire with my family and dogs. My
background in art is drawing, as a kid I used to watch a lot of cartoons and I would sit
there draw the cartoons as I watched them. My uncle and father got me into drawing
and not only did I enjoy it but it was so relaxing and reduced my stress, I truly felt free.
My process was to find a scarf to imitate the head wrap and a button up shirt that went
with the scarf. I wrapped the scarf around my head and took the sides of the scarf and
twisted it all the way to the bottom. Then made a bun and tucked the end of the scarf
under the bun, buttoned up my shirt. I then added jewelry and did a natural look for my
make up and posed flexing so my mom could take the picture. After I wanted my picture
to look like the portrait I was imitating and have a water color/pastel look so I
downloaded an app to my phone called Glaze, and added a pastel filter to my picture.
The artist who made the portrait I imitated is Tim Okamura, he paints and draws
portraits of African-American women representing them in a strong pose. The title of the
portrait I imitated is called Rosie No. 1 and was made in 2016. I chose this portrait
because it made me feel empowered. It really stuck out among the rest of the portraits I
was considering. It definitely aesthetically pleased me because this portrait had a lot of
emotion and I loved the empowering feeling and the confidence the painting was
portraying that's what made it beautiful.
This project was a little creative, I never wore a head wrap and it was a little different for
me but I enjoyed the experience. I see a lot of head wraps in African-American culture,
as far as fashion and even in history I think this project was perfect because it was
inexpensive and allowed me to get creative, while also adding a little bit of my
personality to an art piece.
