High School Sports
This gallery focuses on three sports from South Ayden football, basketball, and cheerleading. In the football section you can compare the photos of the first and last football teams at South Ayden. In the basketball section you are able to see different sides of the sports teams from the women’s basketball team from the 1954-1955 school year to men’s varsity and junior varsity teams. In the cheerleading section you can see the enthusiasm of the cheerleading team.
The South Ayden Eagles during the school’s forty years of operation faced off against many formidable Pitt, Craven and Lenior county high schools. One of the first coaches at South Ayden was B. R. Haselrig. He was the first head football coach at South Ayden during the 1965-1966 school year when the football team was established. During this same year B. R. Haselrig was also coaching the varsity and junior varsity basketball teams. After coach Haselrig, Johnny Davis was hired as the head football coach in 1968 and remained at South Ayden High School till it closed in 1971. Coach Davis then moved to teach at Ayden-Grifton which was opened after South Ayden High School, Ayden High School, and Grifton High School were closed and merged.
