It was established in 1580 and was once known as Plaza de la Victoria and it would be renamed after the Argentine revolution. Casa Rosada is pictured and many foreigners visiting call it the Pink Palace. This is the official government building where the president works. Plaze de Mayo is the key focal point in the community for public gatherings. More historical buildings that surround Plaze de Mayo are Banco la Nacion which is the central bank, the cathedral, and the Cabildo. One of the most important statues in Argentina is located in the center of the square. It is General Belgrano on his horse holding the country’s flag. He was an important figure for Argentina because he was one of the leaders for the Argentine Declaration of Independence. One of the most important events that happen in the square are the Madres de la Plaza, which means Mothers of May square. The port has provided many economic opportunities to the city and has been a stepping stone to its growth. In Barcelona: The Great Enchantress Robert Hughes points out that “Barcelona was shaped and its density determined, by the fact that it began as a port and has been one ever since” (2004: 31). Being a port city, Barcelona had the chance to grow, it had the opportunity to become the center of economic activity for the region. In Thomas Hall’s book, Planning Europe’s Capital Cities, Hall discusses how important the port was in making Barcelona the center of trade and industry: “Barcelona’s importance of a port and trading city was growing, and by the middle of the century the town had become a major industrial and trading centre” (Hall 1997: 128). Even today the port has played a big role in economic activity, and the port or docklands was redeveloped for the 1992 Olympics. Antonio Sánchez brings this topic up in his article “Barcelona’s Magic Mirror,” “these zones are often in desperate need of economic and social revitalization if they are to become a dynamic part of the city” (Sánchez 2016: 300). Over time the port has played a huge role in the development of Barcelona, as well as in the day to day activity of the city. It is a marketplace, approximately six blocks worth. Puerto de Frutos is not like any other. It is as if each department of Walmart had its own shop and then some. You can get just about anything at this large marketplace. Fresh fruit, bags, scents, lamps, kitchen appliances, the list goes on. It is the place for shopping for souvenirs and gifts for your family and friends. You can find something for everyone at a reasonable price. Most importantly, it is the spot to get the cheapest Mate cups and straws. Mate is a large part of Argentinian culture, especially near the region of Buenos Aires. There is also a good selection of restaurants to choose from. There is a great view of the Lujan River. There is even a peaceful boat tour around Tigre, which is a great break from the city. Puerto de Frutos along with other activities surrounding the marketplace is a day long excursion. People who go to this area can walk without have worry about dodging or getting run over by cars. Sometimes there are street performers playing music or putting on shows, and many stop to take pictures and enjoy themselves. There are many locals who show up in groups near some restaurants with large windows to practice their dance moves, hoping to better their dances and performances. A notable landmark in this area is the Puente de la Mujer, Spanish for the “Women’s Bridge.” This is a footbridge connecting the two sides of the port that was built during 1998, right before Argentina’s economic collapse. This is one of the largest rotating pedestrian bridges in the world and allows for the safe passage of ships of various types. Many people stop to take pictures of the beautiful spectacle while others take pictures on it. In The Faerie Queene, the fierce character Disdayne appears in a quilted jacket and checklaton: <blockquote> He wore no armour, ne for none did care, As no whit dreading any liuing wight; But in a Iacket quilted richly rare, Vpon checklaton he was straungely dight, And on his head a roll of linnen plight, Like to the Mores of Malaber he wore; With which his locks, as blacke as pitchy night, Were bound about, and voyded from before, And in his hand a mighty yron club he bore. (The Faerie Queene VI.vii.43) </blockquote> Disdayne wears a turban, like the “Mores of Malaber,” thus making him into a middle-eastern threat as much as an Irish one. There may be yet further confusion intended by Spenser: O’More is an Irish name, and Irish women (if not men) wore turban-like linen wraps on their heads in Spenser’s day. The bars provide opportunity for an energetic nightlife while the museums and plazas make a great place to bring children for the day. The entire neighborhood is a great way to experience what Buenos Aires has to offer. If you can make it there on a weekend, you’ll find fairs and markets with local crafts and products. Apart from unique and exotic products, it also provides a chance to talk with some very interesting people. Specifically, the one in plaza Francia was magnificent. My favorite spot in Recolecta is a shopping mall that my friends and I found while wandering the avenue Santa Fe. The mall has a skatepark aesthetic, and is decorated with stickers, spray paint, and posters. The mall has shops full of alternative clothing, graphic shirts, and musical memorabilia. It even has two tattoo and piercing shops! No matter what you’re looking for, you can find it in Recoleta.
