                    <text>Montjuïc
Montjuïc hill is located towards the center of Barcelona in a very popular area of the city.
The site was used for “expressions of self-managed fun by the working class, such as picnics by
the many wells (known as fontades) or popular dancing” (Sastre-Juan and Valentines-Álvarez,
2016: 107).
The popularity of the area made Montjuïc hill the perfect place to introduce new, more
technological modes of fun and entertainment through urbanization and modernization. In addition
to introducing technology as a source of entertainment, the urbanization of the hill was also meant
to promote the use of electric light.
The urbanization of Montjuïc hill was part of the 1929 International Exhibition, which
included the modernization of many other sites. One of the most famous engineers in Catalonia,
Marian Rubió, and his two sons, Nicolau and Santiago Rubió, oversaw, planned, and executed the
urbanization of the hill with the assistance of other engineers and architects. The project included
mechanical rides, a funicular railway, pavilions, and an “electric magic fountain” (Ferran and
Nieto-Galan 2016: 223). Montjuïc hill would become one of the final pieces of the ‘technological
fun belt’.
The ‘technological fun belt’ included “the Parc de la Ciutadella in the eastern part of the
old city center, the Collserola mountain in the northern part of the new expanded city, and finally
the Montjuïc hill in the western part” (Sastre-Juan and Valentines-Álvarez, 2016: 95). The
introduction of new technological fun played a key role in the overall urbanization of the city.
Montjuïc hill remains a significant artifact today marking the cultural transformation of Barcelona.

                    <text>Montjuïc and Tibidabo
The city of Barcelona has mountains on two of its sides. The mountains are
Montjuïc and the peak of the Collserola range, Tibidabo. Montjuïc is a broad, shallow hill
with a nearly flat top. It is believed that its name comes from the words for “hill of
Jupiter” (Hughes 2004: 33). Montjuïc was used for agriculture and animal grazing
throughout history. The eastern side of the hill has a very sharp drop off from which the
entire harbor can be seen. Robert Hughes described Montjuïc in his work Barcelona: The
Great Enchantress as “the vantage point from which the whole plain of Barcelona could
be seen spreading below” (2004: 4). Throughout history Montjuïc has been home to
many fortifications. Currently the Castle of Montjuïc still stands. The military fortress
dates back to 1640, but it is currently serving as a civic facility for Barcelona. It has seen
many battles, but the government of Barcelona now hopes it can serve as a place for the
people to go for cultural activities.
Tibidabo is the tallest mountain in the Collserolla mountain range, which also
overlooks Barcelona. It is home to The Sacred Heart atop Tibidabo, the first expiatory
temple constructed in Barcelona. The idea behind the expiatory temple is that people
from all over, and from all backgrounds, can come and confess their sins. It was placed
atop the mountain to draw attention and “was clearly meant to impress onlookers near
and far” (Sobrer 2002: 206). It was constructed on the Tibidabo so that it could be seen
from all angles. The hope was that it would impress onlookers and encourage people to
come and repent.

                    <text>Museu Martorell
It is undeniable that science, technology, and medicine has influenced the lives of people in
Barcelona. Science can metamorphose areas by rejuvenating them. To celebrate the
scientific/technological culture, the Parc de La Ciutadella was crafted. “The parks and gardens
also provide Barcelona with a “memory” of its deep structures,” this would include the advances
that science provided (Kent 2002: 222). The Parc de La Ciutadella is known for the Museu
Martorell. This museum was unprecedented at its time of creation since never before had a
public museum been opened and operated. Serving as a representation of the “educational”
aspect of the park, the museum generally received praise from all visitors. The museum also
allowed historians of science to “look at ‘traditional’ sites of knowledge production at
laboratories, observatories, and collections (cabinets and museums)” (Hochadel and Nieto-Galan
2016: 7).
Due to the patronage of Francesc Martorell i Pena, who lived from 1822 to 1878, the
museum was able to receive enough funds to operate. The building itself is beautifully designed
using the neoclassical style by a local architect named Antoni Rovira i Trias. Perhaps this style is
fitting since the Greeks were honored for their attention to order and logic, which is precisely
what Barcelona was celebrating.
“The donation of a selected piece of rock to the Museu Martorell [...] bore testimony to
[the donor’s] patriotic zeal and commitment to Barcelona” (Hochadel and Valls 2016: 25). While
it originally housed various scientific artifacts, now the museum exclusively exhibits geology
collections.
