It becomes very clear that he and his companion, Gurb, are not from Earth. They show clear signs of being extraterrestrials. It is explained that they have landed in an area that the locals call “Sardanyola” (1990: 5). This area is more commonly known now as Cerdanyola del Vallès. It is a town that is located on the north side of the Collserola ridge, a mountain range that is in between the rivers Besòs and Llobregat as a part of the Catalan Coastal Range. Cerdanyola del Vallès is the home to the main campus of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), a public university that is famously known for fostering research. The first human with whom the narrator in No Word From Gurb communicates is a tenured professor from UAB. According to Oliver Hochadel and Agustí Nieto-Galan, Barcelona has always fostered scientific and technological advances (Hochadel and Nieto-Galan 2016: 1). The Autonomous University of Barcelona is a twenty-first-century example of Barcelona’s continuing contributions to the scientific fields. As for relaxing in Cerdanyola del Vallès, there is always Synchtron Park. It is a business park, but it also contains many green spaces. It is a modern attempt at the famous nineteenth-century urban renewal of Barcelona. Oliver Hochadel and Laura Valls describe the urban renewal as an attempt to bring greenery into the modern world and incorporate it into people’s lives (2016: 26). These amusement parks in Collserola emerged as a business opportunity to make profit by advertising “healthy, moral and entertaining” locations to guests (Sastre-Juan and Valentines-Álvarez 2016: 102). These parks were essentially areas promoted as a utopian universe, offering glorious landscapes and grandiose hotels. Turó Park was publicized as being “dominated by the fresh airs” from Collserola, while the Rabassada was referred to as “Eden”, which may have been a tiny bit of a stretch. The irony in this is laughable, as pristine and unadulterated air was heavily promoted by those same elites who owned the factories polluting the same air and water. Urban planners continued to endorse this illusory environment through the construction of rides in Tibidabo that were meant to illuminate the “views of the mountain and the sea” (Sastre-Juan and Valentines-Álvarez 2016: 105). Despite the false advertisement spearheaded by the upper class, these amusement parks had much success during their time, performing as beacons of “technological fun” and paving the way for many more advancements in mechanized thrill rides. However, no advancements could have occurred without the impetus of electricity. The year 1875 began Barcelona’s introduction to electric lighting, and from that instant onwards, electricity shaped everyday life by welcoming technology into daily functioning and easing Barcelona into its character of a “ciudad maravillosa,” outweighing its faults. The Conde de Asalto is like a man-made river with constant foot traffic that connects the Rambles with the Parallel. The ‘river’ grants access to many of the houses, businesses, and clinics throughout El Barrio (Zarzoso and Pardo-Tomás 2016: 171). The presence of clinics along this river increased as the concept of social medicine became more popular. Social medicine is the commitment of physicians to provide necessary medical attention to deprived urban areas. The Conde de Asalto and El Barrio Chino lack sanitation regulations and public healthcare necessary for preventing illnesses and diseases. “The search for […] better hygienic conditions prompted some enterprising Barcelona surgeons” to transform the Conde de Asalto through the installation of clinics (Zarzoso and Martínez-Vidal 2016: 76). The clinics are necessary for providing adequate treatment to the natives of these areas (Zarzoso and Pardo-Tomás 2016: 160). In addition to clinics, the prevalence of museos anatómicos, or anatomical museums, increased. Professionals who practice social medicine use museos anatómicos to educate the public on medical science, disease prevention, possible treatments, etc. However, the museos anatómicos received negative views due to their explicit nature (Zarzoso and Pardo-Tomás 2016: 173-77). Also explicit in nature, prostitution and brothels are very popular and in high demand in the Conde de Asalto. Many of the establishments along the Conde de Asalto cater to the needs of prostitutes, such as rubber ware and bathing establishments, abortion clinics, and photographic studios, and granted access to brothels. The purpose of rubber ware and bathing establishments is to purchase condoms and to cleanse genitalia, respectively.
