                    <text>Romea Theater
In the writings by Alfons Zarsozo and José Pardo-Tomas entitled “Anatomy of an Urban
Underworld,” they refer back to tourist guides produced in Barcelona in 1929 that featured
routes through the area known today as El Raval (Zarsozo and Pardo-Tomas 2016). Simply
mentioning “severe overcrowding” while skimming the surface of the character and history of
El Raval, tour guides purposely avoided the conditions of the residents living there.
One particular point of interest for tours within the El Raval, on the corner of Carrer de
l’Hospital and Carrer de la Junita de Comerc (just a block away from La Rambla) was the
Romea Theater. According to the Government of Catalunya website, individuals and
establishments are awarded with the Cross of St. George as an esteemed honor in Catalonian
culture that signifies great nobility. Created in 1981, the award (named after the patron saint of
Catalonia) is for those people or locations that performed “outstanding services in Catalonia in
defense of their identity” or otherwise civic and cultural accomplishments. The Romea Theater
was awarded the Cross of St. George in 2015 for its contributions to the spirit of Catalonian
culture. As discussed in Robert Hughes’ writings of Barcelona, the Catalonian culture was
nearly defeated several times by government forces as well as a political crisis during the reign
of Francisco Franco (2004). This theater stood as a representation of Catalunya art and
humanity that managed to thrive despite the constant opposition, giving an outlet to an array of
creative minds in the form of writers, directors, and actors.
The theater itself still operates today, giving residents and tourists an upscale location to
marvel both at classic architecture and modern theater.

I firmly believe that even though it is necessary to plan now and look to the future to
grow, the past should never be forgotten; this being said, it makes sense that Barcelona’s
offering of new-age architecture while still preserving remnants of the past is what impresses
me most.
Through the Santa Maria del Mar, we can see the “essence of medieval Barcelona”
(Hughes 2004: 40). The motif of width and length being emphasized over height is repeated
through this landmark, illustrating the sense of security and triumph medieval Catalans felt
when designing the buildings, and as a result, the Santa Maria del Mar is a primeval example
of Catalan Gothic architecture (Choay 1969: 26; Hall 1997: 127). This cathedral, located where
“the city meets the sea,” was a “place made by workers for workers,” utilized by the sailors and
merchants of Barcelona in the 14th century.
In 1936, it was attempted to be burnt down by subversive anarchists during the Spanish
Civil War; incredibly enough, its structure prevailed (Hughes 2004: 59-60). And what a
structure it is—its lofty ceilings and unprecedentedly spaced columns served as an influence
for Gaudí’s La Sagrada Familia, a true testament to the extravagance and allure of the Santa
Maria. Though the internal area of the church was burned out and its vaults are scathed by the
heat of the fire, the Santa Maria may as well have been reborn through the fire with its
unadorned, seemingly untouched interior reminiscent of the Llotja only hinting at secrets of the
past.

                    <text>Statue of Joan Fiveller
The people of Barcelona have a reputation for political activism, something which is
demonstrated by the statue of Joan Fiveller found on the exterior of the Adjuntament, the building
that houses the government. This statue was created in the 1850’s. According to Robert Hughes’
book, Barcelona: The Great Enchantress, Joan Fiveller was selected over Hercules to represent
the concept of civic strength (Hughes 2004: 16).
Fiveller served as a counselor of the city, and when the king of Catalunya and Aragon came
to visit Barcelona, Joan asserted that the king and his party should pay taxes on the salt cod they
consumed while in the city. Though symbolic, this act garnered him the respect of his fellow
Catalonians and sparked the long history of political activism in Barcelona (Hughes 2004: 16).
This includes the city going dark in 1878 because they refused to pay the municipal tax on gas,
and the very successful tram strike of 1951 against the Franco regime. The citizens of Barcelona
have always been unafraid of powerful opposition, for example, according to Antonio Elorza’s
chapter on “Regional Autonomy and Cultural Authority” the Franco regime’s desire to muffle all
aspects of Catalan culture including language and religion, only served to “bring forward a more
radical form of nationalism” (Elorza 1995: 330).
This theme of political revolutions has helped to shape modern Catalan culture, one of the
most influential instances can be found in the introduction of Teresa Vilarós’s chapter, the Setmana
Tràgica or tragic week most notably, “the anarchist bombings of the Liceu- Barcelona’s Opera
House” (Vilarós 1999: 43). Joan Fiveller’s statue outside of the Adjuntment is a monument that
exemplifies the everlasting revolutionary values of Catalan culture.

                    <text>The Mammoth
The Parc de la Ciutadella, located in the Gothic quarter, included the addition of a giant
mammoth statue located in the Parc next to the Cascade fountain (Parc de la Ciutadella Information and Pictures). The statue of the great wooly mammoth was built as a symbol and a
way to showcase the Catalan culture to the citizens and tourists of Barcelona. Composed of large
stone and built to be life-sized, the mammoth statue was introduced to the Parc de la Ciutadella on
December 12, 1907 (Hochadel and Valls 2016: 35).
The wooly mammoth was chosen as the symbol of the Catalan culture because a few people
once found a single tusk of a wooly mammoth fossilized in the ground. This caused many to
believe that the mammoths once roamed the lands of Catalonia thousands of years ago. Though
the Parc was supposed to be a place that the community could all come together, the creators were
scared that people would vandalize and destroy the mammoth. This led the builders to put up a
fence around the wooly mammoth statue in order to prevent any vandalism from happening
(Hochadel and Valls 2016: 35). The mammoth was meant to be admired and loved instead of an
object for people to climb on or ignore. That fence is no longer surrounding the statue and nothing
is blocking tourists and children from being around it. The public enjoys playing on and around it
and many tourists climb it to take pictures.

<text>The Palau de la Música Catalana
The Palau de la Música Catalana embodied the zenith of Domènech’s career. Though a
mere 15,000 ft², the Palau retains an abundance of color and individuality that paints the walls,
its hues “dancing a marvelous dance” (Sastre-Juan and Valentines-Álvarez 2016: 92). Through
his building, Domènech links several themes, beginning with the binding of Catalan nationalism
and internationalism, evident in the proscenium. The left arch represents “cançó popular,” or
songs of the people, whereas the opposite side of the proscenium illuminates música universal
and classicalism. These concepts are portrayed through the upper half of Beethoven flanked on
either side by two Doric columns, which insert an air of austerity and masculinity to counteract
the vibrancy exposed throughout the rest of the building. Domènech also interlaced the old with
the new, wielding Gothic stone and glass, mutating them into steel.
Although an admirably unique concept, the same steel provoked many pretentious
complaints, such as the inability to hear Chopin over the cacophony occurring on the
cobblestones outside, voiced by Josep Pla (Hughes 2004: 119). Other disapproval was
expressed when Domènech finished his construction, with many doubting its worth of twice its
intended budget and naming it the Palace of Catalan Junk (Hughes 2004: 127).
In spite of the disputes that came with its erection, the Palau de la Música Catalana has
remained true to its name, and continues the motif of Catalan patriotism by embodying the
essence and history of Catalan music, its shape created by its citizens’ everyday lives (Ferran
and Nieto-Galan 2016: 242).

                    <text>The Submarine
The city of Barcelona was full of dreamers: artists and scientists with an array of ideas that
contributed to history and culture. One of these scientists was the famous inventor Narcís
Monturiol. While Monturiol did not contribute to Barcelona’s physical landscape and structure, he
created the first fully functional submarine to explore the waters of Barcelona: a machine he
decided to call Ictíneo.
Authors Hochadel and Nieto-Galan claim that Barcelonan history would not be the same,
“without accounting for the role of science” (2016: 5). This is especially true in the case of
Monturiol’s submarine. His invention opened a whole new world of discovery for the Catalan
people and eventually, the world. Especially because Barcelona was not the only European country
interested in underwater exploration at the turn of the 1800s.
In Barcelona: The Great Enchantress, author Robert Hughes explains that Europeans as a
whole “dreamed of probing the depths of the sea” for centuries (Hughes 2004: 88). He goes on to
say that this dream came to fruition once Monturiol decided to apply engines to the contraption
(Hughes 2004: 89). Not only was this a scientific achievement, it also gave Catalans a sense of
pride that one of their own was able to make such a contribution to the scientific world.
As the original submarine was unfortunately destroyed, a model and monument of the first
submarine, Ictineo I, can be found at the entrance of Barcelona’s Museu Marítim or Maritime
Museum in the Gothic Quarter (Narcís). Another monument of the submarine can be found at
Plaça de Catalunya in the window of an antique shop (Hughes 2003: 82). This allows for
Monturiol’s legacy to be remembered to this day. Institutions around Barcelona such as the
Maritime Museum, which displays the submarine, allow “involvement of interested committed
and often highly skilled citizens” in order to learn more about Barcelona’s “construction of an

urban culture of natural history” (Hochadel and Valls 2016: 26). While the submarine is not
technically something that developed naturally, it did help scientists make more discoveries of the
natural world beneath the blue, both at the time it was invented and today as the technologies from
the original submarine have been the basis of underwater exploration around the globe.

                    <text>Tibidabo Amusement Park
Tibidabo Amusement Park in Barcelona began as a group venture by the elite to create
an exclusionary park for wealthy citizens. This kind of exclusion was sought after in the wake
of a city-wide movement for inclusion and more open-area recreational sites for Barcelonans
of all ages and incomes.
High in the Collserola mountain region of Barcelona, this group began to construct a sort
of getaway, complete with expensive eateries, comfortable hotels and high-end amusements
away from the hustle and bustle of the city below. By securing ownership of the land,
transportation and parks themselves, they were able to produce expensive attractions to which
only the upper class had access.
Among these mountain parks (Tibidabo, American, Lake Valley, the Rabassada and the
Turo Parks) only the Tibidabo Amusement park remains standing today (Sastre-Juan and
Valentines-Alvarez 2016: 100). Many factors could be attributed to the impressive lifespan of
this historic park. Opened in 1901, it stood atop the Tibidabo mountainside allowing visitors to
witness a stunning panoramic view of the city and oceanfront below.
To reach the mountainside park, visitors had the opportunity to ride in new forms of
transportation: the tram (Tramvia Blau) and the Funicular. These two methods of climbing the
mountain were introduced along with the opening of the amusement park. Still in operation
today, the tram and Funicular were engineering oddities to the people of Barcelona, and
continue to carry that same sense of wonder today. I am sure that simply reading or listening to
descriptions of the ride to the top of the mountain could never translate the atmosphere that
surrounds this marvelous park, complete with smells of carnival food, screams of joy and
breathtaking views of the city of Barcelona.

Barcelona has been represented in cinema in various forms, most notably by experimental
filmmaker José Luis Guerín. En Construcción by Guerín is a pseudo-documentary that utilizes
several cinematic techniques to represent the essence of the Barrio Chino.
Joan Roman Resina reads into the mind of the director and the way he depicted this
neighborhood of Barcelona. He describes Guerín’s tactic of still shots, rarely panoramic or
overhead, in order to achieve a feeling of intimacy with the streets and buildings. Resina writes
about the Barrio Chino as being a maker of “ghosts,” specifically the historic buildings that are
pushed aside as relics or lost forever for the sake of innovation (Resina 2008: 263).
One such building that survived the reconstruction of the Barrio Chino was Sant Pau del
Camp (Church of St. Paul of the Countryside), a Romanesque church that was featured several
times in En Construcción, presumably as one of the “ghosts” that remained as a reminder of the
past. The construction of this site is a mystery, with clues to the time of inception like the
gravestone of Guifre II Borrell from the year 911 (“Sant Pau del Camp”). Traces of the original
architecture can be seen on the capitals and bases of the portal, yet the remainder of the structure
was rebuilt in the 11th and 12th centuries following its destruction during a Muslim raid of 985
AD (“Sant Paul del Camp, Barcelona”).
Longhurst writes about the Spaniards of the 1960s “abandoning their roots” in search of
opportunity in the city, a social shift that continues to draw the center of culture out of rural
Barcelona (Longhurst 2000: 19). This is evident with the Benedictine monastery, which was
once located outside of the city of Barcelona, yet through generations of construction,
renovation and expansion, it now sits within the Barrio Chino surrounded by tall buildings,
bustling streets and curious tourists. This site was declared a National Monument in 1879.

                    <text>Gran Teatre del Liceu
The Gran Teatre del Liceu is a Barcelonian theatre and opera house. In the early 19th century,
Barcelona was thriving in population and economics due to its importance as a port and trading
city (Hall 1997: 128). This allowed Barcelona to undergo regularization, or a sense of new order
or organization as opposed to its troubled past (Choay 1969: 15). Building a music conservatory
was a symbol of stability that contributed to this regularization. According to the Liceu’s official
website, the building was designed by Miquel Garriga i Roca and it was opened to the public on
April 4, 1847, almost 10 years after the idea of an opera house first came to fruition (“History”).
The Liceu is located in the Rambla, or “the iconic promenade in the Old Quarter” (“The Building”).
This famous arts institute is still in operation to this day, but its journey through time has not been
too kind.
The Liceu has had numerous dangerous encounters that interfered with its structure and
operation. In 1861, a fire broke out and completely destroyed the entire auditorium (“Important
Events”). In 1893, two bombs were thrown onto the main floor. Miraculously, only one of the
bombs detonated, but it killed and injured many civilians (Sobrer 2002: 216). The auditorium and
stage were destroyed once again by a fire in 1994. After it was rebuilt its ownership was shifted to
the public, or more specifically to the Consortium after previously being owned by Societat de
Propietaris, or Society of Owners (“History”). Since its reopening at the turn of the 21st century,
no such travesties have occurred.
The Liceu is still well into production and operation. It is owned by the Consortium, or a
group made up of a variety of Barcelonan councils such as the Consorci del Gran Teatre del Liceu
and the Barcelona City Council (“History”). Today, the Liceu is fully operational with
performances being conducted with every season.
