James L. White was earned an A.B. degree from East Carolina in 1943. Upon graduation, he volunteered for service in the United States Army, where he served in the Ryukyu Island campaign and the occupation of Japan during World War II. After his honorable discharge, he taught at a high school in New York before returning to East Carolina to provide 41 years of service as a professor and administrator.
