After completing boot camp (04) at Recruit Depot Great Lakes, Illinois, he attended Corps School, then Field Medical Service School in Jacksonville, NC where he learned emergency medicine which would allow him to be attached with Marine Infantry. After graduation, Bonfiglio was attached to the hospital in Maryland, and after a couple of months, he went to Fallujah, Iraq with (05-06) 2/6 Weapons Company. After returning home from his deployment, he was attached with 3/3 Kilo Company in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. On his second combat deployment (07-08) to Iraq, his last tour of duty, he was attached with 2nd AAVs and deployed to Marjah, Afghanistan, where he was injured due to a gunshot wound through his left high inner thigh, from which he lost the use of his left leg and foot. After returning to the U.S., he underwent numerous surgeries at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in an attempt to save his leg and nerve. Various complications, however, led to the amputation of his left leg below the knee. After his last tour of duty, Bonfiglio enrolled at East Carolina University for two semesters before transferring to Penn State.
