Phillip Dixon grew up in Wake Forest, NC until his parents separated when he was ten and he moved with his mother to Raleigh. He received a National Defense Student Loan and an Equal Opportunity Grant to attend East Carolina University. While at ECU he worked as a hall proctor, orientation counselor, sold class rings, and bused tables in the cafeteria. He was also vice president of the student body, a student intern at the North Carolina Court of Appeals and a member of Phi Sigma Pi. After graduating in 1971, he received a law degree. He then returned to Greenville to establish a law firm.
