Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center (2011-Present)

Formation:

The LGBT Resource Office was initially proposed during the thesis defense of Summer Wisdom, a graduate student in the Department of Sociology. Wisdom had explored campus resources for LGBT students across the nation and found that ECU was sorely lacking in comparison. It was decided that the creation of an office dedicated to providing LGBT-themed programs and resources was necessary for campus.  

In January of 2019, the LGBT Resource Office is officially renamed the “Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center.” A generous endowment from Dr. Peel allowed the office to relocate from Brewster Building to the New Student Center. The Peel Center now stands as both the largest and only named LGBTQ+ center in the UNC school system.
