Mary Rose Stocks was raised on a farm in Duplin County. The third of four children, she was the first in her family to attend college. Stocks entered East Carolina Teachers College in 1949 and graduated if a degree in education in 1952. After college, she worked as a teacher in Chicod and Greenville.
