Mary Boyd graduated from Greenville High School in 1933. Her family scraped together the $38.00 tuition for her to enroll at East Carolina Teachers College where she worked towards a normal professional degree. While at E.C.T.C., Mary participated in the chorus and was a member of the Poe Society. She graduated in 1936 and was offered a job the same day.

Mary Boyd Mann taught in Pitt and Craven Counties until the beginning of World War II, when her family relocated to Norfolk where she continued to teach. She moved back to North Carolina in 1970.
