Louise Dickerson grew up on a tobacco farm in Person County, North Carolina. She was the first female in her family to attend college. Louise met her husband, Dr. James Pleasant, in 1956 while at East Carolina and they married in Greenville in 1957. She graduated from East Carolina in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1979 Louise Pleasant received a second Bachelor Science in Music Education from East Tennessee State University.
