Jarvis Hall

Built in 1909, Jarvis is one of ECU’s original campus buildings and the only one still serving its original purpose as a residence hall. It was named after former North Carolina Governor Thomas J. Jarvis, often called the “Father of ECU.” Jarvis chaired the original Board of Trustees and oversaw the school’s early construction. The building was designed by Hook & Rogers, and H.W. Simpson out of Charlotte, N. It was originally constructed in Spanish Mission style and was expanded in 1914 and 1920 to include modern amenities like running water in every room. It was fireproofed in 1924 and renovated multiple times, most recently in a major two-year restoration from 1998 to 2000 that added a multipurpose room and patio. (Building Histories, 2025)
