Doris Blalock Maroney grew up in Wilson County, North Carolina and was encouraged by both her parents, who had not finished high school, to go to college and become a school teacher. While she was a senior at Lucama High School, Doris visited East Carolina Teachers College and knew she found where she wanted to attend college. During her years at ECTC, Doris was elected president of the Women’s Student Government Association.
Doris Blalock Maroney graduated in 1941 and obtained a teaching position at the Masonic Orphanage in Oxford, North Carolina. She has lived in Indianapolis for sixty-three years.
