David G. Fussell, Sr. was raised in Rose Hill, Duplin County, North Carolina, where his family ran a general store. He enrolled at East Carolina College in 1960 and graduated in 1963 with a degree in education.

After earning another degree at Duke University, Fussel worked as a teacher and school principal in Duplin County during the difficult first years of school integration. He later became involved in winemaking and founded the Duplin Winery.
