Austin Building (New)

The “New” Austin Building was constructed in 1964 on the site of the former college baseball field. It was designed by A.J. Maxwell Jr., out of Goldsboro, NC. Like the Old Austin building, it was named for Herbert E. Austin, a professor of Science and Geography and acting dean at the East Carolina Teachers Training School. The building originally housed a mainframe computer center. It remains home to the Department of Mathematics. In 1965, the Arthur D. Frank Seminar Room was added in honor of a longtime social studies faculty member. The building also featured campus chimes, donated by the Class of 1969, which played the Alma Mater daily at noon before being retired in later years. (Building Histories, 2025)
