This was created as an assignment for Susan Ludeke's ART 1910: Art Appreciation course. It was inspired by the Getty museum challenge that started during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Getty Art Museum, in Los Angeles CA, challenged the public to browse there selection of pieces and try and recreate them with things around their house, their family can even their pets. The following is an essay I wrote that went along with my project that explains a little bit about me and the piece:
Hey! My name is Jessica Wagstaff my major is nursing, and I absolutely love it. I really enjoy doing makeup and I would say making flower arrangements is a hobby of mine. I do not have a background in art myself, but my mother and sister are both artists, so I have always been surrounded by it.
The first thing I started on with my Imitate Artwork challenge was finding a picture that had a connection to me. Originally, I was looking for a painting that could pose for myself but when I found the one, I wanted to imitate I immediately thought that the girl in the painting reminded me of my friend Emma. So, I asked her if she'd be willing to pose for my project and she said she was happy too. Then I gathered my materials I already had a blue sheet I can use as a background, a gold bangle and makeup, so I went to the store in search of a handheld mirror and a fluffy ball to imitate an old blush applicator. To take the photo I pulled up the image and posed Emma as close to the girl in the painting and took a bunch of pictures from different angles.
The artist I am imitated was Norman Rockwell. The painting is called Little Girl with Lipstick, and it was painted in 1922, it was the cover of the American magazine in February 1922. I chose this artwork because I have love for makeup and I can remember putting on my mom's lipstick as a little girl, so it related to me. It is an aesthetically pleasing painting to me, I especially appreciated the whimsical way her hair flows. I would say in some ways it could be a self-portrait because I see myself in the little girl.
I would say this was a very creative project for me, I haven't done anything like this in a long time. Finding the right angle was the most difficult part for me because I wanted it to be perfect.
I think this is a cool project because it allowed people to create and be social by sharing their creativity it allows them to feel a sense of community while having to stay at home. - Creator
