COVID-19
Ever since I was in high school, I have wanted to become a nurse. My junior year, I took
a health science class to see if I wanted to major in it when I got to college. I fell in love with it. I
fell in love with the material my teacher taught and the stories she used to tell us when she was a
nurse. It made me have a passion to care for people. Today, I am a third year intended nursing
student. When the pandemic first started up until today, the hospitals and doctors' offices were
filled with patients who needed care. It has affected all hospitals around the world; no rooms
available, no space for all the patients who have coronavirus, or space for patients who need care
that have something else wrong with them.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant and negative impact on the nursing
workforce.” (Chan, G.K., Bitton, J.R., Allgeyer, R.L., Elliott, D., Hudson, L.R., Moulton
Burwell, P.) (May 31, 2021). COVID-19 was not heard of until the year 2020, so health care
providers and nurses were figuring out what the virus was just as well as the public. They had to
research and learn quickly how to care for the patients who came into the hospitals. Since this is
a newly found virus, no one has antibodies to protect themselves from it. This leads to people
contacting it easily. Many people who are critically ill are sent to hospitals leaving no rooms or
beds for patients who are injured or sick with other illnesses.
Another negative impact this infectious disease has on nursing is that many nursing
students, or intended nursing students, are changing their majors because they do not want to
work with it. I can understand that. Whether students choose to work in the emergency room,
operational room, intensive care, or even labor and delivery, the virus has affected it all. Not only
do nurses have to constantly deal with patients who have contacted the virus, they themselves

worry about getting it. They must be covered from head to toe with protective clothing and
equipment if they are caring for a COVID-19 positive patient, so they do not contact it.
Yes, this pandemic has negatively impacted nurses and hospitals, but I am going to end
this on a positive note and tell you why I still want to pursue this career. I have a passion for
nursing because I want to help people. I know that sounds cliche and tons of students say that,
but I will explain. When patients come into the hospital sick or injured and leave healthy because
of the care I provided is a satisfying feeling. I am willing to do whatever it takes to care for a sick
patient. Whether that is sacrificing my health for a COVID-19 positive patient or not. During my
school journey and taking the required courses to get my degree, I have learned it takes hard
work and discipline. I have a feeling that the hard work and discipline I have used to take my
courses will help me become successful in my future career. I am willing to put my best foot
forward to get to where I want to go.
