The Lovers II Remake
I am a nursing major. My interests include helping others, being outdoors, and having fun with my friends. I took art classes throughout high school and I love to paint. Over quarantine I spent so much of my time painting when I was not doing school work. I forced one of my friends to dress up in attire similar to the clothes in the painting with me for this project. I made a tie out of a hammock strap for my friend dressed in the suit. I used pillow cases to cover our heads and placed them in a manner that matched the veils in the original painting. I also strategically placed us in front of flags on the wall that were blue and red to act as the background of the painting. I had to rearrange the flags to do this. The picture was taken with my phone camera by another one of my friends. The artist whose work I imitated is René Magritte. The painting is titled The Lovers II and was created in 1928. I chose this piece of art because no one else had done it yet and because it fascinated me. I admired the mystery and irony of the painting. The painting also represented wearing a mask in some aspects which I thought was interesting. This project was extremely creative for me. In college you do not have all of the materials that you would normally have when you are home and able to go to the store. I used items that I would not have originally thought to use. The Getty project was perfect during the Pandemic because it allowed people to use creativity and everyday household items to imitate famous paintings and works of art.

Selfie in a Mask
I took the picture in my room because it give out this bright light, I took it at night time and uses a portrait mode with a flashlight. In the photo it show that the light is on me and there's a shadow behind me. The pandemic has brought so many of us difficulty time and there're time we are at our darken time and feel like there's no light, the floral mask bring out the positive vibe with beautiful and calm color. Evi's vigil
In December of 2020, about nine months into the pandemic, my cat Evi suddenly became very sick. She refused to eat, and when tried to entice, she would become sick. Upon taking her to the vet, they informed me that her liver was failing, and they couldn't give an answer as to why. We attempted treatment, but it only made her suffer. After a few weeks, I had to make the hardest decision of my life, and she was put down. I had her cremated, and she was placed in a beautifully made wooden box. I still have the vigil in my living room. I can't stomach to move it yet.

Mask of Pictures
I was a biology major but I just switched to exercise physiology. In my free time, I like to work out and spend time with my friends. I also enjoy playing soccer and trying new sports. The only background I have in art is participating in art art club, kindergarten through third grade. Although I don't have a prestigious background in art, I do enjoy drawing and learning more about different pieces. I never pursued any path in art although I was very set on doing so in middle school. I thought that taking this class might be interesting and fun since I never followed though with taking an art class.
I have a wall of polaroids of me with my friends and family in my room. I took three photos down and taped them together to fit the shape of my face. Lastly, I cut the strings off of a disposable mask and attached them to my picture mask. The process to make the mask was not long or difficult, I just had to figure out the construction. The websites that inspired me were linked under "playful ideas" on the instruction page. I especially liked the masks that were made out of unconventional objects. They were not functional but they caught my eye. I wanted to use something a bit more random than cloth for my mask, which is why my polaroid idea came up.
This face mask is not protective what-so-ever. I wanted it to represent more of what Covid looked like for me. Each photo represents a small moment in the pandemic where I found joy. Covid 19 has really hurt our college experience and life in general. I wanted to show that the way I got through Covid was by keeping connected to my friends and family. The pandemic basically turned all of my close friendships long distance. By staying in touch and making the moments I had with them count, I felt a lot less stressed about life in a pandemic. I think that this mask well defines me because I am a very socially needy person. I like making connections and being around people I care about. Although Covid limited this, I am still able to look at pictures and remember that life will go back to normal soon enough.
The way I posed for and took this picture is not unique on any way. However, it shows me how I am naturally. Selfies are so common and now masks and Covid regulations are too. By mixing the popular selfie photo with a mask, Covid is further normalized. When looking at the pictures themselves, I picked some of my favorite moments to show that Covid may have affected my dorm life, class experience, and some of my grades, but I can still find those happy little moments. This was created as an assignment for Susan Ludeke's ART 1910: Art Appreciation course.

Impression of a famous artwork
Hi! I'm currently a freshman majoring in Biology. My interests in school has also been anything in the science department. Outside of school, my interests include going hiking, fitness, and doing anything spontaneous. In art, I've always found painting a fun past time. Finding a picture for this assignment, that I could relate to in some way, was very hard for me. The process for recreating the picture I chose was very easy, however. To recreate it all I did was put on a black long-sleeve shirt, put my hair in a bun, then sit in front of the camera and take the picture. After I took the picture I edited it onto the original background from the portrait. The artist whose work I imitated was "Octoroon" by Archibald Motley, it was created in 1922. Motley would paint portraits of African-America women who had different levels of black in them. He wanted to showcase every aspect of being black. An "octroroon" is a term used from someone who is 1/8th black. Even though, I'd be considered a "quadroon" (someone who is 1/4th black) I chose to use this portrait because I feel like it gives awareness and representation to people of two or more races. People of more than one race often have a hard time being accepted by either race. You're either too much of one or not enough of the other. This assignment was very fun and allowed me to relax, in a way. I did feel creative doing this. This was an assignment for Susan Ludeke's ART 1910: Art Appreciation course. The Getty Museum Challenge was created by the Getty Museum as a way to keep people engaged during the pandemic.

Creative Selfie Mask
My name is Ronita Stanford, a senior majoring in Communications with a concentration in interpersonal/organizational skills also minoring in psychology. I am super excited to get to walk this May, as I finish this summer. I started in 2016 and I must say it has been a long but rewarding ride. My interests are my children, my family, and my business. I own my own salon and I enjoy servicing beautiful people every day. I say I work on blank canvases daily, or works of art that just need a little enhancing. I have been open for 10 yrs this year and I am very humbled and blessed by this opportunity. As a child, I enjoyed creating looks of expression with my hair. As an Cosmetologist, we have to learn about colors, lines, shapes, elevations, and more. All associated with the arts. Something else interesting I have a radio show that I do on a local station.
Well, the project at first I was going to recreate an image, yet in light of the current events, I can say that it greatly influenced and inspired me to change to my selfie mask. The mask and shirt that I am wearing are from an organization called BlackVotersMatterFund.org. An organization dedicated to make sure that My voice matters. It reads; "I Matter, You Matter, We Matter: Black Voters Matter". Yes, it is a protective mask that has a place for carbon filters and I do wear it if you go out in public. So my process was more of ordering the mask and cutting it to fit a filter into it for added protection and sometimes I wear an extra mask for added protection. I took several poses of myself using a timer and a selfie stick and emailed it to myself. Then I edited the picture and uploaded it.
It represents who I am because of the statement that it makes. This is also sediment to my feelings of how I have dealt with the Coronavirus situation, humbly by grace trusting that my Lord would see us through. The woman in the picture represents a strong black woman, confident in who she is embedded in different patterns and colors. Yet carefully complimenting her skin tone and dress. It represents me.
I took this selfie as a statement to continue to speak for all Black people and people period who vote. I feel no one deserves to have this right taken from us, everyone should have a chance to cast their vote, no matter which side you vote for just vote. After this current election, it has become apparent that our Black voters/votes matter if not why are they fighting so hard to stop it. As a Black 45 yr old woman, I have voted ever since I was able after 18, and I have never seen such hate and violence as I did after the current election. So I chose this mask, as a statement that I wear daily. As I do Matter, We Matter, You Matter, and Our Vote really matter. And I wear it even more now after Georgia passed that unprecedented bill to suppress voters' rights. This virus and current election brought out behaviors never seen before from people, and I feel it's vitally important to continue to fight and speak up for the rights of Black people in America today. Especially as we relive and watch the trial of Mr. Floyd we know there are still massive changes that we still need to make.

Imitate an Artwork
For this project my process was first figuring out what piece of artwork I wanted to imitate. There were so many good ones but I finally came across one I liked and felt I could do. I picked two flowers and used a necklace across my forehead. I used a good amount of blush and red lipstick to really capture what was in the artwork. To take the photograph I set my phone up and put a timer on.
The artist whose work I imitated was Wladyslaw Theodor Benda illustration from Hearst's international 1924. I chose this specific piece of art because I felt like I could execute imitating it quite well. This artwork aesthetically appealed to me. I wouldn't say it was easy because trying to get the right angle and pose.
This project was pretty creative to me after viewing some of the other students' work. Mine wasn't the most creative but it was on point if I do say so myself. I feel as if this was a fun and good project to do during the pandemic.

Cheetah Mask
I am currently a senior studying finance. I actually plan to graduate this May! The excitement for graduation is so real but very heart breaking at the same time. The things that interest me are iced coffee, walks, the beach, and hanging out with my family and friends. I am a social butterfly and my love for makeup is seriously expensive.
I chose Option 1 for my inspiration. The masks are obviously the only trend from 2020 that seemed to stick around for 2021, unfortunately. The idea for my art came to me as soon as I saw option 1. I love makeup and the thought of being able to do my makeup and wear a mask made my heart skip a beat. The ones who wear makeup and battle a mask, know the struggle.
My mask is actually a protective cloth mask that I wear. I love cheetah print and that's why my project is based on this specific mask. Also, Old Navy has the best mask with very cute prints on them at an awesome price. COVID-19 has slowed many things down for me, but my love for walks, coffee, makeup, and my family has also grown through this crazy adventure.
I chose this photo to show my makeup skills and how I designed my face to somewhat match the cheetah print on the mask. COVID has really put a sad mood in the air for the past year and these cute masks seem to bring back my life when going out in public and dreading having to wear a mask.

Creative Selfie With A Mask
I made a mask of fabric and sewed manually a plastic cover so it could be painted on top. I used white acrylic paint to act as a base and then mixed orange, pink, and white acrylic paint to create a color as similar to my own skin as possible, then with a pencil I traced the design I wanted. I mimicked a Pop Art painting, using the artworks of Andy Warhol as a reference. I proceeded to paint the different colors according to the details I traced with the pencil. I dipped a toothpick in lighter shades of paint to create the dots characteristic to the Pop Art movement. I chose the Pop Art style for my mask because I think it is a lively and eye-catching, as well as it tends to incorporate everyday objects and turn them into pieces of art, thus I incorporated the ''mask'' since now it is considered an ''everyday'' object in our lives. For my pictures, I used my cellphone camera alongside with natural window lighting to try to catch as much detail as possible in my mask. I really enjoyed this project, painting was very calming and almost therapeutic, as well as it has been the most fun I had with a project since I entered college. I think this is a very creative way to express yourself and personalizing your mask according to your interests, it is a way of incorporating art and bringing a little bit of fun in these hard times, as well as you are not only expressing yourself but staying protected while at it. This was created as an assignment for Susan Ludeke's spring 2021 ART 1910: Art Appreciation course.
