Post-it mask
Hello! My name is Dwayne and I am a freshman intended nursing major here at Ecu. I’m interested in science and slowly started to pick my major after getting interested in psychology in my junior year of high school. Some of my other hobbies include crocheting, reading, and watching films or tv shows. All through middle school and high school, I found myself loving different forms of art. I was very interested in drawing, painting, and photography for most of my life. I think this artwork was a unique way to view the pandemic and how people dealt with living in it through a creative view. When reading the project guidelines I wasn’t sure what to do. I found an old used mask in my room and decided I wanted to reuse materials as I have been trying to become more eco friendly. So with the used mask I cut up several sticky notes from the past few weeks and added them to the mask. I put the sticky notes backward so that the writing would not show. Then I decided since the sticky notes were all different colors I could play with the lighting of the room since in art my favorite medium was abstract. The mask is a little torn and old under the sticky notes so it would not be usable anymore. However, I feel the masks can represent the colors and creativity I want to show the world. I also think It shows how reusing and repurposing anything can be important especially in art. Taking an object and changing its meaning or giving it new life and be extremely satisfying. The mask can show that even though the pandemic took a lot from everyone it’s important to remember to always look at the positives and be as bright as you can. While with the pose I wanted to look more laid back to allow some of my personality to shine through. In my picture, I wanted to make sure I gave an insight into what aesthetically I enjoyed. So I decided a closeup, personal picture would work best. Then I decided to do it in front of my record wall because it’s my favorite part of my room. I feel like overall the use of color and background make my picture unique and demonstrates how I creatively express myself. I like to make sure that in the clothes I wear as well as personality-wise I make sure I do it in an expressing way. Colors have always been liberating for me, back to when I dyed my hair to express myself to now when I surround myself with them. Selfie in a mask
A face mask that is protectable from the coronavirus, but also made with materials I already had. This project was started by the Getty Museum when artists at home became creative with the materials that they already had with them. This was created as an assignment for Susan Ludeke's ART 1910: Art Appreciation course.

The Female Banjo Lesson
This challenge was inspired by the Getty Museum during the pandemic. I used items of mine and my family members and stayed in a safe location. To imitate this artwork, I had to gather some items from home and family members. I am pictured with my six-year-old cousin Mikaela, my mother's vase and candle, my grandmother's pitcher, and my grandfather's guitar. I had to go to my family church to have enough room and access to the guitar. My grandfather took the picture for me and I tried to edit the photo to give it a hazy look. I used a dining room in the church, removed all the extra tables and chairs, and periodically laid everything out according to the picture as best as possible. The artist I imitated was Henry Ossawa Tanner. He created 'The Banjo Lesson' in 1893. I chose this artwork because I wanted to imitate a piece by an African American artist, picturing African American(s). I originally chose an artwork of an African American woman posing in front of a wall with an orange dress, but I thought it would be too boring. I realized this artwork was a piece I could do with my own resources. This artwork was somewhat aesthetically pleasing because my grandfather tried to teach me a few notes on his guitar when I was younger, but this picture was easy as well. This was created as an assignment for Susan Ludeke's ART 1910: Art Appreciation course.

Selfie in a Mask
I am currently a freshman at East Carolina University. My major is Biomedical science. I want a minor in something else but I don't know what I want it to be yet. My dream is to become a neurosurgeon. A neurosurgeon is a medical doctor who diagnoses and treats conditions of the brain, spine, and nervous system through surgical and nonsurgical treatments based on the type of injury or illness. My interest in art grew because someone that was very close to me taught me how to draw and from then on I started to. I love to draw Realistic things like animals.
For this assignment in Susan Ludeke's ART 1910: Art Appreciation course, I chose to create a mask that was able to tell how I felt about the pandemic. I used a regular white mask and painted on it. I painted tears on it to show the pain I was going through seeing all those people dying and suffering because of the virus. I chose to edit my picture grey to show the depression and sadness of how other people may have felt also. It is also more likely to draw attention because it makes everyone more empathetic to what I am expressing.
It is a protective mask but I will not be wearing this mask in public because to me it has a very sad image that I used. The word "enough" expresses how I felt while watching and hearing what was going on around the world during the pandemic. the word also represents how I felt being in quarantine in the house all day, I got tired of it and I wanted it to end.
I created the mask to show what I went through throughout the pandemic. I took the photo at the playground downtown the way I did because it shows how sad it is that you don't see families and children coming together to have fun because it's not safe especially when people are worried something may happen if they get affected. when I edited the color to grey it elevates it more. my photo is creative because the mask could have a lot of meanings to it. This mask also represents the type of society we are all currently living in and stands for the struggles we all individually face. The photo also represents the struggle we all were facing when we were scared and worried about getting sick or not.

Debuntante Nurse Imitation Piece
The Getty imitation project was created to allow people to create art from the comforts of their homes while in the pandemic lockdown. To make this project, I first did some brainstorming to help me decide the artwork I would imitate. I used my lab coat and then to create my nurses hat, I used tape and paper. All my items were already at home. I photographed myself using my phone. I figured it would be easiest to record a video and then pick the best screenshots from it. To attempt a hazy look, I used a filter from Instagram.
I decided to imitate Debutante Nurse by Richard Prince (2005). Richard Prince is an American artist, who currently lives in New York City. I chose this artwork because of my interest in the healthcare field and the importance of nurses during the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. It was aesthetically pleasing to me and was also easy to recreate.
This project was kind of creative for me. I was able to create one piece for my ensemble, which was fun. I wish I chose an artwork that allowed me some more creativity. Otherwise, I enjoyed the process! This was created as an assignment for Susan Ludeke's ART 1910: Art Appreciation course.

Cherry Blossom Facemask
I chose to make a face mask because I thought I could get creative with it. I used a paper towel in my kitchen and folded it up about 3 times. Then I wrapped the sides around with a rubber band and folded the sides in, making it so they can wrap around. I stapled the sides into the middle and it was complete. I learned how to make this by watching one of the videos that Ms. Luddeke recommended.
This mask is not protective because it is made out of one simple paper towel. I chose to go with an asian styled mask design, drawing these trees around called "cherry blossoms". Since I am Chinese myself, I thought that I could use some background knowledge of these types of trees to create art. Since we've been quarantined, I have learned quite a lot about our Chinese background. This was created as an assignment for Susan Ludeke's ART 1910: Art Appreciation course.

Crochet Mask Project
My name is Madi Garcia and I am a freshman at ECU, I am from Cary, NC, and I am an intended nursing major. My interests are listening to music, doing fun things, and hanging with friends and family. I’ve always had an artistic interest but since the pandemic began, I realized that being stuck inside led me to picking up art again. I began painting and drawing. I’m not the best but I definitely improved since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.
I chose the creative mask project because when I saw that it was an option, it sparked some interesting ideas, I could basically do whatever I wanted with it. I was sitting in my room brainstorming when I looked over and saw my yarn & crochet hook, crocheting is a new hobby I picked up during my quarantine when I had Covid-19. I used my 5mm crochet hook and some blue and black yarn.
My crocheted mask is not a protective mask, so I will not be wearing it in public. I feel though that just because my mask in particular isn’t technically a protective one, that masks nowadays are a part of everyone’s identity whether we like it or not. The last year for everyone hasn’t been difficult, everyone is constantly anxious, awaiting what just will happen next. When I felt these overwhelming feelings, I turned to art and new creative projects to distract me and calm me down, one of the projects was crocheting a cardigan which I am also wearing in my picture.
I took my picture outside because it is somewhere where we all are lucky to be lately. I feel the lighting and the colors of my mask and clothing really are brought out. I feel my project and picture are unique because it is something in itself that has helped me through this pandemic and is very personal to me and my mental health as well.

COVID-19 mask
I am a freshman here at ECU. My major is intended nursing and I am very excited to start my journey on that path. I am so grateful to be back on campus because I love meeting new people and I love socializing. College and this pandemic have taught me to appreciate every opportunity that is given to me and to not take them for granted.
For this project, which was an assignment for Susan Ludeke's ART 1910: Art Appreciation course, I decided to create a mask. It is very simple, but the message goes a long way during this rough time. I noticed that I had a lot of extra masks laying around, so I decided to write on mine with sharpie. In the lighting it's a little bit hard to see but I decided to write "Stay positive" with a smiley face and black undertones on my letters. Positivity is extremely needed during this unknowing time for everyone.
This mask demonstrates a positive outlook on the pandemic. In making this, I hope people see this and smile. There are so many things going on in our world right now, and it is scary that no one knows what will happen. We take all of the precautions we can to lower the cases of this virus, but after a year, it is still with us. In all of these negative events, I hope that my mask spreads positivity and happiness to someone, no matter how simple it is.
I do plan on wearing my mask in public, while hoping to make others happy and spread joy. The black undertones on the lettering represent the bad and dark times of this past year, on positive words. This shows how being positive and having a great mind set helps people get through dark times. I cannot wait to wear my mask out and spread happiness.

Son Of Man - Under Quarantine
When I read about the imitate art project it took me back to one of my favorite paintings “Son of Man” by Rene Magritte. I saw it in a movie and thought it was interesting and classy. Since it was painted in 1946 it seemed to me the artist was painting a gentleman who was descendant from Adam in the Garden of Eden. I had the suit jacket and tie, but no apple or Bowler hat. I purchased the Bowler hat and had a surgical mask lying around, so I used the mask to bring the painting to a more current environment-a pandemic. To me the mask I am wearing represents my new and current everyday accessory whether I want it to or not, an everyday carry item that without it you seem to be socially unacceptable. The pose comes from the painting but the mask conveys the look that allows me to be a respectable citizen to navigate this crazy, infected world. I think this artwork shows the creativity and lengths I had to use to complete the ensemble and it represents that state of the world we live in, forcing us to mask up to protect ourselves and each other. Masking shows everyone you care about them and respect them enough to protect them and yourself.

Golden Tears Recreation
I am a nursing major. After college I hope to earn my masters and become a nurse anesthetist, but I would also love to be an army nurse for a little. Some of my interests include hanging out with my friends, volunteering, and hiking. Everyone in my family is very talented with art, except me. I have always loved art and I love seeing what my mom and my sister can do, but it doesn’t come very easy to me.
This was created as an assignment for Susan Ludeke's ART 1910: Art Appreciation course. The Getty Museum's art challenge was created as a way for people to engage during the pandemic. I got one of my friends to help me with this makeup process. This was good because of COVID- there was nothing that I had to go out and buy. I have never been very good at makeup, and she loves to do it. Most of the gold “flakes” are eyeshadow, and she tried to make it look as realistic as possible. She took the photo, and I edited it a little bit to make it look a little better. I used photoshop to add in the gold on the left. This painting, Tears of Gold, was painted by Anne Marie Zimmerman, but it is more famously known with Gustav Klimt. He tended to use gold leaf in a lot of his paintings after 1900, so she ended up being influenced by his style. Zimmerman and Klimt were very good friends, but it was mostly her who painted it. It was created in 1862. I chose this artwork because I was drawn to it the second I saw it. I thought that this piece would be incredibly fun to recreate, and it is overall beautiful. Even though it was also pretty easy to recreate, I mostly chose it because of its aesthetic appeal. This project ended up being incredibly creative for me. I have never been good at makeup, and even something this simple was stepping out for me.
