This mask represents my experience as a neurodivergent person, and how I've had to "mask" my emotions and expressions around others. The designs are colored in a way that mimics a child’s drawing, which represents how neurotypicals find our behavior immature, and thus infantilize us. But if one is to see past that, then there is beauty to be found within the designs. I then cut off half of the mask off, so you could still see half of my real face alongside the plastic one. I wanted to convey the variety of emotions I feel under this “mask”, all the while all you see physically is my blank expression. This is what the everyday person sees me as, this is what my classmates see, this is what most neurotypicals see; most don’t know what’s behind the mask.
